Let's Count...

How many lives were destroyed or have the high potential to be destroyed (Islamically -speaking) :

Father: In prison probably forever <--- destroyed
Mother: Dead <--- destroyed
Child#1: Will be raised by non-Muslim grand-parents <--- high potential
Child#2: Ditto
Child#3: Ditto

That would be five lives. And why? Because some idiot(s), some fanatic(s), probably someone or more, who would never do it himself or themselves, convinced a young convert to go to Somalia for a "greater cause". Great job dude(s)... now be prepared to answer to Allah for destroying five lives.

Mr. Maldonado, it won't be easy for you either, whoever set you up will be asked about five lives, but you followed them in destroying four; well I should say one plus potentially three, unless Allah protects the children's Islam. I doubt that the grandparents would have much sympathy left for our faith, and I dare say rightfully so... after all, their daughter was killed for this "cause", why would they teach their grand-children about the faith that Maldonado claimed for the "cause"? Allahu Musta'aan... may Allah raise these children as Muslims and not punish them for the grave errors of their father.

That was my 2 cents after reading about this story on Tariq Nelson's and Umar Lee's blogs.

yeah...this story is sad and all...

but...

....much worse happens in this cold and cruel world. let's not get too emotional or moved by this. Modernist Muslims (who posted this story on other blogs) just use this as fodder to further perpetuate their hatred of the Sunnah.

Deobandis kill people and get entire villages wiped out in Pakistan by military forces -- yet nobody cares. No one would dare attack "traditional" Islam (basically sufism) - HOWEVER - when some guy like Maldonado goes off to Somalia....it immediately results in a blanket indictment of Dawah Salafiyaah or other Islamic movements (that call to the way of the Salaf).

I knew your comments were based on racism or nationalism. No one even mentioned DS, just the extremist of any stripes.

For all your making fun of Hamza Yusuf, maybe you should pick up his book, Purification of the heart.

Ya akhi Abu Ameerah, how did you arrive at that tangent? Who is talking about salafiyyah or any other movements? In any case, this is my response that I added on Tariq's blog:

-----
There is no doubt a tragedy is occurring in Iraq, far worse than any other these days... And yes, I have to admit that I was disappointed that I did not see a wave of blogs highlighting the painful story of the Iraqi girl who was raped and consequently killed with her family.

HOWEVER, one tragedy should not and does not lessen the sorrow of another. If tomorrow, my family member dies, I would not be thinking, "well this isn't so bad, its only one person". Rather, it would be painful in its own right.

It is a grave error indeed when we invest all our emotions in one issue here or there, and then judge all the other issues in a relative manner. Instead, we should give justice to every tragedy in its own right. One person who dies due to injustice deserves our respects and our voices, similar to when thousands die due to injustice (in proportion but still injustice).

Lest we forget, it is Allah who reminded us, what means: "...whoever kills even one person, except as punishment for murder or major crimes, it would be as if he has killed all of humanity. And whoever saved one innocent life, it would be as if he saved all of humanity.”

Finally, this story is not just about one dead Muslimah and the future of three children, it is more so about the importance of educating converts and providing them resources that are balanced, so that in the future we don't have more Maldonados. Wallahu Al'am, Wallahu Musta'an.

Assalaamu alaykum,

Maldonado is an example of countless young men, if he were an exception, we could mourn it as such. But the real tragedy is that we must mourn the death of this sister and the plight of her children as the new norm.

The reason to get so down about this is that in these times of fitnah, when the Ummah is in dire need of a group of men with the strength and honour to liberate them, young men are being so misguided, that they are left not even able to defend and protect their own families. So how can we count on them to protect young Iraqi girls, or villages of Pakistanis?

As'Salaamu Alaikum wa'Rahmatullah!

"...it immediately results in a blanket indictment of Dawah Salafiyaah or other Islamic movements (that call to the way of the Salaf)."

--Unfortunately Amad...this is what "mainstream" Muslims are doing when they see the mistakes in ONE example of some kid named Maldonado, for example. It is now common place to refer to Dawah Salafiyaah being "dead" or as a "cult" ...etc etc....

--The sad part is that Maldonadado's case does nothing to refute such allegations.

--I am not trying to read anything more into this very sad case. I just made a comment on one small aspect of this tragic story.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

UM ABDULLAH: Responding to you or your comrades is a waste of time qutie frankly speaking. For all intents and purposes, you can feel free to call me whatever you like. This is America -- you have Free Speech. Say whatever you feel ukhti...just let it out...FULL FORCE...FULL-ON...AS-IS...YOU GIVE IT!

Two things irritate me however:
1) The fact that you felt the need to take your confused rant from another blog -- where you kinda' already went off and even defended those who cursed at me and used other derogatory terms that are not from the Sunnah -- ALLLLLLL the way to this blog where you continue with the same rant! Mashallah, Um Abdullah...you are a skilled blogger. With such ranting skills you could easily land a job at FOX News...you would be a strong candidate indeed!

2) Your accusations of "racism or nationalism" are damn near laughable -- if they weren't so sad and tired! How dare you accuse another Muslim of committing a serious Act of Kufr (in the form of racism) by just a few comments your read on some blog.

Is this your understanding of the concept of Racism and Nationalism in Islam?

Do you think it is a small thing to accuse another of nationalism (Asabiyyah)?
Verily, this is a concept that can take one outside the fold of Islam, A'oudhoobillah.

Even though Ibn Khaldun supported the concept of Asabiyya in his famed work: مقدّمة ابن خلدون...I do not. Also, contemporary Ulema have already expounded upon this matter in great detail, alhamdulillah -- therefore as a layman all I can do is merely try and understand their reasoning and logic.

Do you think that it is the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAAWS) to judge people in this manner and make such harsh condemnations?

All you have done UM ABDULLAH is to expose your Jahiliyyah and "cultural baggage"...
--You know nothing about me (who I am or where I came from) ... yet you are firmly aware that I am -- at some level -- a RACIST. Astagfirullah!

Here, we talk about: "The Ummah this..." and "The Ummah that..." --but at the end of the day ... this is how we deal with one another.

Um ABDULLAH...disagree with me alllllllllll you want. Call me whatever offensive term or curse word you like. However, I would simply ask you to avoid accusing people of "racism" or "nationalism" as these kinds of things are (or at least lead to) Kufr.

Finally, it kind of shows the weakness of your original argument when you throw out such terminology. I mean, it's one thing to be upset that I took Hamzah Yusuf Hanson's name "in vain" ... but to drop the "R" word on me ... C'mon Now!

...and Allah (Azza wa Jall) knows best.

Ok,

First of all I was just making my blog rounds and saw your post here, and noticed that you again dismissed what those of us who were sad of what happened to this family.

You bring up things that were not said, extremist come in all stripes.

Why cant you just admit you made a bad joke and it back fired. Tariq and Umar are not Sufis, they are Salafies, they follow the same scholars you do but are more open to a modern opinion on things, like many who follow Yusuf Qaradawi, why are you bringing up Sufis.

Anyway, why did I even comment. Your comment just seemed real cold in that you dismissed this American who died as not a big deal since so many Muslims overseas are dying, their deaths matter, this one doesn't. Lets not get too emotional just some convert dying.

I do apologize for throwing out the racist card, I hate that myself but that is how you are coming off.

salaam,
What is anonymous trying to say? Way to long of a post for me to read.

abdu, to be honest I did not understand what anonymous meant or perhaps i did not scrutinize the comments too much. There is a lesson to be learned here: lengthy comments are often ignored or skimmed through. I learned that quite early (Sr. Ruth actually gave me that advice); hopefully everyone else does too.

As'Salaamu Alaikum

"Why cant you just admit you made a bad joke and it back fired. Tariq and Umar are not Sufis, they are Salafies, they follow the same scholars you do but are more open to a modern opinion on things, like many who follow Yusuf Qaradawi, why are you bringing up Sufis."

--UM ABDULLAH: OK. So I made a "bad joke"...does that warrant the response I got? If we were to look at the Sunnah of the Prophet SAAWS such responses and accusations wouldn't be warranted.

--Who said Tariq Nelson or Umar Lee are Sufis? I certainly didn't make such a nonsensical claim.
1) Over the years I have seen Umar Lee attend Dar al Arqam -- and I most likely met him there. Actually, come to think of it...I would see him from time to time and we would exchange "salaams". I doubt he remembers me though...but I sometimes I arrive to the dars late and so would he. LOL

2) Umar Lee is a writer for The Muslim Link. I don't think the editor of that paper would hire a sufi...AllahuAlim.

3) "Modern opinion" -- Explanation please.....

4) Sure. Some people follow Yusuf Qaradawi...others avoid him. Some of his opinions are contraversial -- including those related to Palestinian Resistance movements.

5) "Bringing up Sufis": Moi? Never. I just mentioned Sidi Hamzah Yusuf Hanson...that's all. Allahualim but I don't think mentioning his name is akin to some kind of indictment of sufis or sufism.

"Your comment just seemed real cold in that you dismissed this American who died as not a big deal since so many Muslims overseas are dying, their deaths matter, this one doesn't. Lets not get too emotional just some convert dying."

--The death of ANY Muslim is truly a sad affair. We Ask Allah (Azza Wa Jall) to make them amongst those who are blessed with best of Jannah, Ameen.

--Sorry for coming off "cold"...that was not my intention.

--I did, however, repeatedly try to express my concern and sadness over the tragic loss of our Sister.

--For the record...I think Br. Amad put it best and I agree his analysis of this sad situation.

ok... lets all hug (electronically in the tafwidi sense!) and bury the hatchet on this one. Everyone who knows Abu Ameerah is aware of his sharp humor and free-spirit comments... sometimes they just don't land 'properly'... But his intentions are not bad inshallah.

And he is pretty modern for me... he's got music and japanese guys doing crazy things on his blog... I am afraid to go there anymore in case he affects me ;)

On a serious note (really), drop ah-kee... its cute, but if i were black, i'd find it offensive.

peace to all.

--DOH! Sorry, it's supposed to be:

"Tariq Nelson is a writer for The Muslim Link. I don't think the editor of that paper would hire a sufi...AllahuAlim."

--well, at least he wrote an interesting article recently...i do not know how regularly he will contribute...
